Stop Smoking

Cigarette smoking is a bad habit that belongs in your past. Replace it with good habits. Imagine the benefits!

How To  Do It
Hypnosis has a long history of helping people stop smoking. Its power lies in training the mind to say no to unwanted behaviors and yes to healthy, life-enhancing practices. Some people go cold turkey when they quit. They may be highly motivated to stop, either by fear of dire health consequences, anger at the cigarette companies, or by the love of a child. Others make earnest attempts to quit but eventually succumb to various pressures and begin smoking again. Wherever you are in the process of becoming smoke free -- just thinking about it, struggling with your decision, tackling the cravings--hypnosis will help you make the leap to freedom.

When I quit smoking I didn't know about hypnosis and how helpful it could be. My father died of lung cancer. He worked with asbestos in his family's business and smoked Camels from a young age. After his death, every time I lit up a cigarette I'd sigh and think, "Here goes another nail in my coffin." That's not the kind of thought you want to be feeding your mind. However, it strengthened my motivation to quit. Something else started happening around the same time. I would stop at the supermarket specifically for a pack of cigarettes, buy a bag of groceries instead, and forget all about the cigarettes. I also began, unintentionally, leaving my cigarettes behind after visiting friends. Clearly, there was a part of me that wanted to quit.

At some point I stopped smoking for almost a year, then started again.  More time passed and I became a serious student of yoga and meditation. As a result, my desire to quit smoking increased. One night I swore to myself that I would never, ever smoke another cigarette again, no matter what! A funny thing happened. The next morning I woke up completely free of all cravings for cigarettes.  Two nights later, I dreamed I was smoking. When I realized what I was doing in the dream, I  shouted "NO" and threw the cigarette on the ground, stomping it out in disgust.  The desire to smoke had left me for good.

In sharing this story I hope to impress upon you the idea that there are parts of us that might have different agendas. These parts have a positive intention though we may not easily recognize what that is. For example, the mother of a friend encouraged her to smoke to relax. In my friend's mind, smoking couldn't be that bad because it was linked to her mother's love. Hypnosis can help align our parts so that they all want the same desired outcome -- being smoke free. I firmly believe that practices like yoga and meditation have a purifying effect on our bodies and minds. Through hypnosis, we can experience some of the same benefits by accessing deeper levels of mind and increasing our awareness. We can replace a bad habit with good habits. When we make healthy choices, we live to enjoy the benefits.
